ARROWHEAD

Published by

THE SENIOR CLASS
of

). J. KELLY HIGH SCHOOL

WISE COUNTY

PUBLIC LIBRARY
WISE, VIRGINIA

Foreword

As Wise County celebrates its 100th birthday this
year, we, the Seniors of J. J. Kelly High School, pre-
sent to you this 1956 Arrowhead celebrating its 18th
birthday.

In the pages of this book we attempt to relate the
progress our school has made in the field of educa-
tion over a period of approximately 50 years.

Dedication

MRS. FRANCES GILLEY
We, the Arrowhead Staff dedicate

I

the 1956 Arrowhead to Mrs. Frances
Gilley who not only has dedicated her
efforts and time to the development
of better student leaders but whose
guidance and understanding we shall
never forget .

MR. STERLING GILLIAM
We also dedicate the 1956 Arrow-
head to Mr. Sterling Gilliam whose
efforts have made our Senior year a
more interesting and enjoyable one
and whose friendship and service are
deeply appreciated .

Our teaching staff has grown from two elementary
teachers and two high school teachers in the year 1899
to thirty in 1956 with an assistant principal and a full-
time secretary.

Since 1904, when our school was Gladeville College
with C. Y. Chapman as President, there have been 13
presidents and principals. Mr. L. F. Addington became
principal in 1930.

Principal

1956

MR. L. F. ADDINGTON

Mr. Addington was born in Scott County. After completing high school at Midway and Gate City, he went
to Emory and Henry College and did graduate work at University of Virginia.

After college, Mr. Addington taught his first school at Clinchport, Virginia; his second at Lakeworth, Florida,
and then came to Wise County in 1924, where he was principal at Pound school. Here he taught the third grade
with only two pupils. On March 1, 1930 he came to Wise as Principal. Mr. Addington has taught summer
schools at Radford College and Emory and Henry College.

In addition to his school activities, his short stories have been published in Esquire, American Prefaces,
Pageant, Jack & Jill, and many juvenile and church magazines. This year he wrote The Story ot Wise County
and became Executive Director of the Wise County Centennial. ™ ' — ~ - —

The first graduating class in 1905, while the school was Gladeville College, con-
sisted of two graduates. At this time the school offered eight subjects, including such
subjects as Greek, Astronomy, and Political Economy.

In this session of 1955-56, 40 courses are offered from which a pupil may choose
either of three courses of study -- College, for those who plan to enter college upon
graduation from high school; Business, for those who take Vocational Office Training
or Distributive Education and plan to go directly into the business field upon graduation
from high school; General, for those who wish to receive their diploma with no special-
ized training.

DOUGLAS HOLYFIELD
August 1955

Doug, who would have been a member of the Junior Class, was one
of the most popular and well-liked members of his group. His friendli-
ness and ability to get along with others make him one we shall always

remember.

We have two school publications. The Arrowhead,
our yearbook, was first published in 1938. The first edition
of the school paper came out in 1926, At that time it was
called the Wise Owl and in 1936 it was changed to the
Arrow.

In 1930 our first band was organized with 20 members
and today we have a marching band of 66 members.

Commercial work was introduced into the school
curriculum in 1935.

The Student Council which stresses student participation
in government is composed of four main officers and one
member from each home room. It was organized approxi-
mately in 1938 with Mr. Eugene Willis as sponsor and
Lawrence Gilliam as president.
